Secretariat file No.2/3093/48.
No. 280.
Sir,
GOVERNMENT HOUSE,
HONG KONG,
16th November, 1948.
4
I have the honour to request permission for the sale by private treaty to the Hong Kong Sanatorium and Hospital of a piece of land measuring about 8,100 sq.ft. adjacent to their existing hospital on Inland Lot No.1386 at "Happy Valley" on the Island of Hong Kong on the terms and conditions set out in the enclosure for the purpose of extending the facilities provided at the hospital.
2.
The Hospital is efficiently managed on modern lines, being well-staffed and well-equipped. It is a private concern controlled by a Board of Directors comprising leading private practitioners. Each Director draws a salary of $400 per year and the shareholders are limited to a six per cent dividend. The balance of the profit is devoted to improving and developing the institution which is a recognised training school for nurses and midwives. Ten per cent of the beds are allocated to charity and semi-charity patients, and the hospital is open to all practitioners in the Colony whose patients are eligible for admission at all times.
3.
The land which I propose to grant to them lies between the hospital and the Hindu Cemetery, and although it could be developed separately it is not considered a desirable residential site because of the proximity of the cemetery. In a residential area such as this I consider that there is no better use to which this land could be put, and the Hospital is deserving of assistance in expanding its activities at a time when the Colony is short of hospital accommodation.
I have the honour to be,
Sir,
Your most obedient, humble servant,
Mkhan
THE RIGHT HONOURABLE
ARTHUR CREECH JONES, M.P.
Enclosure.
GOVERNOR.
